Email from a client wishing to sell a violin she purchased at Jim Clinton Violins:

Message Body: Hello, We purchased a violin from you in 2007. It is a 2006 Sandro Luciano full size violin. We are now looking to sell it. Are you able to help us with this or do you have any recommendations?

Thanks, M.

Hi Ms. M,

I am sad to hear you may be getting out of the violin business. We have enjoyed doing business over the years while your daughter was learning the violin. Here are a couple ways we may help you. After each suggestion are tips and associated warnings. This is a nice upgrade violin model.

1) We may buy it from you.

Tip: We would need to look at it for condition and usually will buy it below wholesale price since it is preowned.

Tip: We are rather proud of our instruments and are usually excited at the prospect of having it back again.

2) We may consign to sell it for you. You name the price, then we add our part to it to determine the asking price.

Tip: You control the price, but if you end up asking too much, your instrument will not sell.

3) Trade up to another model. We can give you up to 100% of what you paid us when trading in toward a higher priced upgrade.

4) Sell it to a friend, or sell it to a friend of a friend. You may not receive as much money as you would like, but you will feel good about passing your violin on to an aspiring musician, especially since your violin was an upgrade model. They will feel good about who they are doing business with while getting a fair price, and everyone will be pleased with the transaction.

Warning: Make sure your violin is in very good condition before you sell it to a friend as you do not wish to have bad feelings over a string that breaks or some other unknown issue evidencing itself after the sale.

Tip: We will be happy to inspect it for condition at no fee.

5) You may sell it in the Greenville Newspaper. Few people think of this idea, so yours may be the only listing. They may offer an online option, expanding your audience. Some listings are free.

Tip: You may get the best price here, at minimal cost, but you must be prepared to meet people for showing it, discussing it, and negotiating the final price.

Warning: Please do not invite someone to your home.

Warning: Always meet in a busy, public place to show and make the sale.

Warning: Share minimal personal contact information.

6) Ebay, Craigslist, Online selling.

Tip: You have to be internet savvy to do this and usually, you will get less than half the price you should.

Tip: You will need to post pictures and give a good description, and will incur associated fees.

If you don’t mind, I am going to post this email correspondence (without your name) so others will find the answers to your question. You never know, someone may ask us about this violin and we may be able to help you sell it.

Thank you,

Jim

A significant shipment of European, handcrafted, workshop instruments has recently arrived in the US, and their exclusive, US importer has given Jim Clinton Violins special permission to exhibit samples from this shipment, making them available for your review, purchase, and order. Models designed for the serious student through college level, to semi-professional are at Jim Clinton Violins as of the first week of April. #1 European instruments represent the birthplace of, and the centuries old tradition of, violin making. And, Jim Clinton Violins is having an explosion of European instruments on Monday, April 14, 2014, one day before Tax Day. They will have instruments by Master violinmaker Jarek Koscielny and by the 15 workmen of the Calin Wultur workshop, not to mention our current inventory of European instruments. You will see, hear, touch, and play, marvelous examples of European craftsmanship. Violins, violas, celli, and basses will be here. You will discover that these instruments compare in quality and sound to much more expensive instruments due to reasonably priced Eastern European labor, US currency exchange rates, and a tradition of highly trained workmen, dating back to the days of Stradivari.

#2 The European workshop concept involves deliberate, methodic, generational training, while passing violinmaking craft from one master maker to the next. In Poland, this method dates back to the 1600s. Master Jarek Koscielny completed his training, passing on his craft to Calin Wultur and his workshop in Reghin Romania. While Master luthier Calin Wultur oversees his workshop, he increasingly involves himself with the instrument making process based on the model. For example, the best of his 15 workmen carefully work under his supervision while crafting model #7 instruments. He ensures that its model outline, plate tuning, bass bar, and varnish appearance meet his personal standards. Jim Clinton Violins will have sample instruments by Master Koscielny as well as by his one-time students at the Calin Wultur workshop. European violins, violas, celli, and basses will be represented at this sale.

Did you Know~

Poland is the only country in the world (not even Italy, the home of Stradivari) that offers a secondary school education for violinmaking, and offers a college level education for violinmaker graduates of these high school programs.

from a blog on the Corner Violin Shop site: Corner Violin Shop discusses Polish violin makers

“Many of today’s Polish makers go through secondary school whose curricula include the art of violin making. There are currently two in the Poland that offer such programs: High School of Fine Arts in Zakopane and High School of Music in Pozna?. These schools’ graduates have an opportunity to continue their studies at the Violin Making Department of Pozna?’s Music Academy. This means that Poland is the only country in the world where violin makers can receive a university-level education.”

See what JR has to say about the Calin Wultur workshop.

#3 Master violin maker Jarek Koscielny resides and makes violins in Czestochowa, Poland. He specializes in making violins and violas based on the patterns of Guarneri and Stradivari. His materials selection is from the best available tonewoods in Poland, utilizing nearby trees from the Carpathian Mountains. He has been making violins and violas for US importer, JR Music Supply for over 10 years. Jim Clinton Violins will have examples of his violins in the days before our sale, Monday, April 14, 2014.

#4 Experience European craftsmanship at sensible prices in the days before our sale on Monday, April 14, 2014. This sale is only on the 14th, and we cannot release these instruments until that day. Also, we will have special pricing that we are not allowed to advertise. This pricing only applies on the 14th. Come, experience the European Explosion and discover whether the craftsmanship and price of Eastern Europe is just right for your next violin, viola, cello, or bass. Contact us with questions, or to set up a sneak preview appointment.

Perform more tips and get greater discounts on your instrument and bow. Then combine the discounts you have selected to apply to your instrument and bow.

#1 Tip: “Wearing-of-the-Green”

Knock 7% off the list price at Jim Clinton Violins. The first tip is “Wearing-of-the-Green”. This will remove 7% from the price of your item(s) on the 13th. Don’t forget, wearing-of-the-green, gives you 7% off. You will need to look rather green when you arrive at Jim Clinton Violins to receive this discount 😉 For those of us who know about Protestant Orange, come on in looking very orange. But, we will not allow fighting over discounts here at Jim Clinton Violins. Read the following tips to increase even further, your discount.

#2 Tip: Why did St. Patrick use a 3-leaf shamrock?

Now, here you are, you have come to Jim Clinton Violins on the 13th of March, and for 7% discount, you are “wearing-of-the-green”, but there is one problem. You don’t think 7% is enough discount. Well, you may deduct 7% more while doing this little tip. Get out the books and do some research. St. Patrick used a 3-leaf shamrock in a very special way to educate the spiritually unlearned. Bring your total discount to 14% by being prepared to tell your assistant at Jim Clinton Violins what lesson St. Patrick taught, with each of the 3 leaves on his shamrock. Read on for even deeper discounts.

#3 Tip: Find a shamrock on select items at Jim Clinton Violins

You are wearing-of-the-green. You are an expert on the spiritual significance of the 3 leaf shamrock, but 14% is still not enough discount to make you a happy little leprechaun. Well, try this simple tip. When you come to Jim Clinton Violins, on Thursday, the 13th of March, you will find some items bearing, or wearing a green shamrock. These items receive 7% discount, so now you have 21% off your item. Surely, this is enough discount, but if this is not good enough, read the next tip for your biggest discount possible.

#4 Tip: Drawing box full of shamrocks for cash discounts

Do you mean to tell me. Those guys at Jim Clinton Violins got you out of your bed, and off of your couch, and there you are, on the 13th of March. You have found the perfect viola, but the discount is not enough. Well, here is how to get the really big discount on your violin: Select a shamrock from the drawing box at Jim Clinton Violins, and see what it tells you. Does it say, $20, $40, or $100? You will receive one of these cash discounts on your bass and bow purchase combined with your other discounts, when you select your personal shamrock at Jim Clinton Violins. That means up to 21% discount, plus up to $100 off your cello and bow.

What if they don’t have it?? Special orders make it perfect with full discounts.

Do you mean to tell me that those guys at Jim Clinton Violins got you out of your bed, took you away from your television, and there you are on the 13th of March looking at something you don’t even like? Mr. Scrollivarius will have a word with that Jim Clinton guy, and will see to it that he orders exactly what you need, and gives you the full discount you deserve, and that he charges you absolutely zero for the shipping!

Still have a question? or feedback?

Ok then, go straight to the top of this page and push the button that says, contact. Now, you will have to do a little type type type, and the guy on the other end will have to go type type type, and after a couple days of type type type, you will be filled with entirely too much fluff, and you won’t be able to resist visiting on the 13th of the month for this really huge and unprecedented sale. As an outsider, Mr. Scrollivarius’ suggestion is: “Do not allow too much fluff into that head of yours!”
